Shark Tank is a show that transcends borders and has made a global fan base with its impressive list of Sharks. Their passion for identifying potential businesses and helping them achieve their entrepreneurial dream binds their relationship with the viewers.
If you are wondering who is the richest of all the Sharks, the answer is Mark Cuban, who holds a net worth of $5.4 billion. Navigating the sports and entertainment industries, he has solidified his profile as a reputed businessman, entrepreneur, and investor.
In Shark Tank alone, he has made around 85 investments and established his position as one of the most popular Sharks on the show with his honest approach. His responses have always been raw, bold, and sometimes hard-hearted. There have been many instances where he has also been in disagreement with fellow Sharks, but this is what makes him unique on the show.
Here are some of the best Mark Cuban one-liners that are too good to be missed out:
1. I’m Allergic To Scams
Ryan Naylor approached the Sharks with ‘Esso Watches’ – a silicone watch company focused on fashionable designs powered with negative ion technology. Seeking an investment of $35K for 20% equity, he further elaborated on its functioning by explaining how our bodies are bombarded with positive ions emitted from electronic devices every day.
Excessive exposure to positive ions puts pressure on our bodies. Esso Watches, which contain negative ions, help combat the positive ions and allow our bodies to get back to their natural state.
Ryan then went on to offer product samples to the Sharks, which Mark refused. On seeing this, Robert asked him if he was allergic to ions, to which he replied that he was allergic to “scams.” He further went on to say that this was not a new invention, had no scientific proof, and was not real. Right after this, he marked himself out of the deal.
2. It’s Hard To Be An Entrepreneur
Ryan Diew, a budding entrepreneur, came up to the Sharks with his product Trippie, an app that helps navigate huge airports easier than ever before. Seeking a valuation of $100K at 10% equity, Ryan highlighted the need for an airport directory when searching for a particular place or thing in the massive area.
Focusing on this pain area, he claimed that his app would offer comprehensive flight information, easy location-based mapping, and quick food delivery at the airport.
But when the Sharks expressed their apprehensions about investing in the product, a visibly irritated Ryan said he didn’t have a rich uncle to help him. The Sharks were highly offended by this and schooled him on it.
Mark, who otherwise goes hard on the entrepreneurs, took it easy and told him that “it’s not easy to be an entrepreneur.” Further, he pinpointed the loophole in his pitch, saying it’s a feature, not a product. The episode proved how Mark Cuban gives his honest feedback without sugarcoating the real stuff.
3. I’d Rather Follow The Green Than The Dream
If you want your business to keep soaring despite all competition, listen to your heart, not your mind. This thought has helped Mark stay on the list of prominent business figures for years. He expects the same from the aspiring entrepreneurs who come to Shark Tank to try their luck and grab investments from the wealthy Sharks.
In one of the episodes, Erica Cohen and Lori Barbera, founders of Baby’s Badass Burgers, came up to the tank seeking $250K for 30% of their company. Both revealed that they have exhaustive experience in the food truck industry and have made sales of $850K in three years.
But their ultimate “dream” is to open a restaurant. The Sharks caution them against shifting from an already flourishing food truck model to a brick-and-mortar store.
Out of them all, Mark Cuban shared the most candid advice, saying that he would rather follow the “green” than the “dream.” Because, at the end of it all, money is the most important thing to have in the world of business.
4. You’re Not An Entrepreneur. You’re A “Wantrepreneur.”
If we’re talking about Mark Cuban’s best one-liners on Shark Tank, this statement can’t be left out. This is one such line that he has repeated over a dozen times in his 14-year experience on the show. But if you observe, he’s said the same to entrepreneurs who lack a foundational premise for their business and come in asking for investments.
Carrying forward his honest and unabashed nature, Mark has proved time and again why he’s considered one of the best Sharks in the show’s history. But sometimes, his words hit so hard that the entrepreneurs get discouraged to the extent that they leave behind what they’re doing.
One such example is when Mark called Amanda Schlecter, the founder of Ledge Pillow, to be a “wantreprepreneur” and not an entrepreneur. He strictly gave his feedback that she could sell only 83 units of her product in 3 years. Since this incident, no traces of her business can be found anywhere.
To Conclude
Mark Cuban never hesitates to give his opinions to entrepreneurs. But this is what makes him outshine the other Sharks. His honest feedback gives them the much-required reality check, allowing them to rectify any errors. While doing so, he says some amazing one-liners, which make him the viewers’ favorite.
