What Happened on the Shark Tank Episode?

Entrepreneur Arjen de Jong pitched his business, AirTulip, on Shark Tank. He presented a vivid display of how polluted the air is these days and how much it affects us. During his pitch, he demonstrated how the AirTulip Sleep headboard purifies the air around the sleeper, creating a clean air zone for the user.

Shark Kevin tried out the sample AirTulip. He lay on the bed and analyzed the experience. He said that the headboard is quiet, and he likes the experience.

The sharks questioned the product’s differentiation. They said that an air purifier would do the same thing, and you could also put one near your bed. The entrepreneur explained that the air purifier does not get rid of the dust particles; they still stay in the room.

The product sells for $3,000. The BOM (Bill of Materials) for 100 units costs about $1,000. Labor adds $500 to each unit. The total cost is $1,500 per unit. This results in a 50% profit margin. So far, only the crowdfunding campaign has generated sales. No other sales have occurred.

AirTulip plans to establish both a physical and digital market presence, initially targeting boutique hotels and clinics to introduce its product.

Did AirTulip Get a Deal on Shark Tank?

After listening to the pitch and analyzing the market potential of the product, the sharks gave their opinions:

  • Shark Mark felt that the business required way too much to yield a return, so he did not offer any deal.
  • Robert said he does not see the path to market for AirTulip. He does not like the valuation either. Along with Barbara and Lori, Robert also declined to offer any deal.
  • Kevin said the company is not worth more than 2 million dollars. He offered $400K for a 22.5% stake.

The entrepreneur did not like Kevin’s offer, so he returned without a deal. However, he is still positive about the future.
