Daymond John, a successful SharkTank investor, has spent years thinking about what it takes to succeed. He shared his formula for success and termed it “three pillars.” According to Daymond, the three pillars are the basic keys to achieving goals and staying focused: knowing your why, setting structured goals, and doing prior research with distractions removed.
Pillar One: Knowing Your ‘Why’
This is where Daymond John states the first and most difficult of the steps towards success lies- knowing your why. He explains that many pursue goals due to failing. These expectations sometimes are imposed by other people on them, as against their reality. “Too many of us are trying to do our why because our parents said that that was success when they were growing up, or we are trying to impress a bunch of people on social media that we actually don’t know,” says Daymond.

He emphasized how many are unhappy when someone’s idea of success is pursued. People sometimes remain in an unhappy relationship or an unfulfilling job simply because they feel pressured by society into thinking they have few options or feel unworthy. The best path, according to Daymond, is finding your why. An articulated sense of purpose offers clarity and meaning toward attaining your goals.
Pillar Two: Setting Structured Goals.
Once you get to know your why, the next step is to set structured goals. Daymond has a strict habit of writing down his goals and going over them from time to time. He says this habit keeps him both focused and motivated. “Every single night when I go to bed, I read the same exact 10 goals. Six of them expire in six months, the other four expire in two years, five years, ten years and so on.”

Daymond also explained the importance of reading his goals at two key times each day: before going to bed and first thing in the morning. Speaking about this he said: “The reason why I read them before I go to bed is because I want it to be the last thing I think about when I go to sleep. The reason I read it in the morning is because if I don’t, we’re too connected, and we let everybody take the most precious things we have in our life from us in the morning.” By maintaining this routine, he ensures that his goals are always on his mind, helping him stay focused and avoid distractions.
Pillar Three: Conducting Research and Removing Distractions
The third pillar of Daymond’s success stands for performing the required study and banishing all distractions. According to him, distractions-especially those related to social media and emails-can severely unmake productivity. “If I don’t read my goals at least once every two weeks, I’ll find myself doing this every morning: checking my social media first. And in comparison with everyone I know on social media–they’re richer than me, they’re skinnier than me, and they’re all in Greece for Christ’s sake. When do these people ever work?” he commented on those facts.

He reiterated that comparing oneself with others through social media presents expectations that are unrealistic and makes way for slow self-esteem. To keep focused on a completely good headspace, he focuses on keeping negative influences out of his life. He had this particular practice where, every year, he would assess the relationships that were working or not: “Maybe nine years ago, I started to cut off at New Year’s Eve who I felt was toxic in my life because if they were not a great friend to themselves, they could never be a good friend to me.”
By eliminating those negative influences and deliberately surrounding himself with the positive, supportive others, Daymond sets up an environment for personal growth and success.
