The first impression of viewers on seeing the Shark Tank investors is that they are highly learned individuals who have been A-graders since their school days. Barbara Corcoran’s story presents a completely different picture, though. The Shark Tank star’s glory has resulted after initial setbacks.
If one looks back at Barbara Corcoran’s school days, the real estate queen often used to obtain D-grades on her report card. This happened due to the Shark’s problems as a dyslexic kid.
Barbara’s Journey From Dyslexia to Shark Tank
Before becoming a Shark investor, Barbara Corcoran had tasted success in the real estate world. Despite her achievements, Barbara, through different public platforms, has often revealed her learning disorder. These incidents showed her followers the troubles she went through as a kid.
In an interview with Jamie Kern Lima, Barbara discussed the topic in detail. She recalled how her mother was a powerful figure who stood by her during her school days. When she saw Barbara getting humiliated, she motivated her to view dyslexia as an opportunity to bring out her creative side.
Based on her mother’s advice, Barbara Corcoran started using her imagination to solve problems and answer questions at school. She added that her creativity allowed her to enhance her intellectual dexterity and eventually thrive in the business space.
The Shark investor claimed that her determination to deal with the situation became her ‘second nature.’ Explaining further, Barbara said, “You hit me on the head, and I bounce up and say, Hit me again!” Although other people may find it stupid, the Shark thought of it as a gift as she had been doing that since she was a kid.
How Barbara Corcoran Became Empathetic After Dyslexia?
During her conversation with Jamie, the Shark Tank investor said that she was thankful that she was dyslexic as a kid. This is because, with the help of this experience, Barbara learned the skills to deal with the feelings of a ‘loser.’ Plus, it allowed her to have empathy to turn it into great management skills.
Barbara added that based on her childhood experiences, she became confident to walk through her sales staff at any office. Although the Shark investor’s office had ‘a sea of people,’ she could ‘feel the vibe’ of anyone who was failing.
Calling it a ‘witch’s instinct,’ Barbara said she interacted with the person and often found they were thinking to quit. The Shark claimed that this was possible due to her sense of harm as a kid when she feared to read out loud in class.
