Do you think that starting a business is tough? If yes, you are wrong! Anyone can start a business but the real hurdle is making it run consistently and efficiently. While there are several external factors involved that make a business successful, the internal factors play an equal role.
External factors like competition, political climate, etc are beyond control, but what can be controlled are the internal factors, decisions, and habits that can make a business flourish.
Mark Cuban, who has built a massive wealth of $5.7 billion as of 2024, has shared a simple leadership style that he changed and it worked positively for him. His advice is simple and yet many leaders fail to understand the importance of it, making their businesses suffer in the long run.
Mark Cuban’s Golden Advice For All Business Leaders
Mark Cuban, currently seen on Shark Tank Season 16, once sat down with Vanity Fair and shared some investing tips. During the chat, he laid emphasis on one skill that is quite “underrated” and many entrepreneurs and investors ignore to adapt.
Mark Cuban told Vanity Fair, “One of the most underrated skills in business right now is being nice. Nice sells.”
Quoting his example, Mark further told the portal, “I went through my own metamorphosis. Early on in my career, I was like bam, bam, bam, bam, bam. I might curse. I might get mad. I realized I wouldn’t have wanted to do business with me when I was in my 20s. I had to change. And I did. And it really paid off.”
Many business leaders feel that being aggressive to their colleagues, subordinates, and partners would increase productivity. But according to Mark Cuban, this isn’t true. In a tried and tested method, being nice worked for Mark. He feels that a person shouldn’t act like a bully if they want to witness a positive change in the environment and the outcome.
How Mark Cuban’s Leadership Advice Can Help You Transform Your Business?
Leaders often operate with a misconception that behaving aggressively will help them survive in a cut-throat and ever-changing business environment. On the contrary, Mark Cuban explains that being nice helped him and can help others.
Business leaders and bosses who are nice to others are naturally more welcoming of other people’s ideas and perspectives. And no matter how great you think your ideas are, there is always a chance that someone has better ideas and someone else has better ways of tackling business problems.
Mark emphasizes that a leader must be open to new ideas and perspectives. He said during the interview, “Take a look at your own company. Does everybody look like you? Because if they do, you are missing new perspectives, new markets, new opportunities.”
A true leader is someone open to learning and adapting to new things. He also must possess the ability to unlearn and relearn. Mark explained, “Even simple things like moms selling to moms, dads selling to dads….different communities. Taking somebody from that community and gaining their insights on how to sell to them more, what’s important to them.”
An entrepreneur may be good at selling mobile phones. But he/she may not necessarily be good at selling them to older generations who don’t feel their necessity. That’s where new perspectives, ideas, and experiences come into play.
Mark’s suggestions are simple and you don’t even need a business degree to learn them. His golden advice applies to everyone irrespective of the field he/she is working in, and the position they hold in the organizational pyramid.
Those who are ready to take their business to the next level must make these healthy changes to their leadership style, and wait for the magic to unfold. Because, as Mark Cuban says, “We can give you all kinds of tips, but it’s the effort you put in that really makes a difference.”
